Song Challenge
Playful sun-like rosettes repeat at different scales, a warm exchange between younger and present selves.

WARM PIANO-POP · PLAYFUL REUNION · CHILD AND PRESENT SELF

A Little Lighter

What if meeting the child you used to be felt less like explaining yourself and more like sharing a sunny afternoon? A Little Lighter is a warm, playful conversation between the child and the present self, with room for changed dreams and a little laughter. There is no need to reveal every turn the future will take, or to make achievement the price of being enough. Draw another sun, leave the speech behind, and go outside together.

A Reunion with the Inner Child

Warm piano-pop at 112 BPM, with a lifted four-bar piano intro, warm bass, and light percussion. Let the piano carry the song without guitar, keeping the reunion fun and affectionate rather than a solemn apology or a list of future achievements. Keep the child and present-self perspectives in conversation, be careful with future spoilers, and return to one voice for the outro.

Lyrics

Verse 1

You wrote your name inside a book And underneath, what you would be Pressed so hard the page below Still held the marks for me to see I brought a photograph along Of who we thought we’d be by now But you’ve been looking past my chair There’s sunlight falling on the ground

Pre-chorus

Some doors stayed closed We wanted them to open I won’t tell you that it didn’t hurt But you can leave the page unturned

Chorus

A little lighter, a little lighter With every step you take There is more to who you are Than the things you’ve yet to be Let a little light come pouring in Let the afternoon be ours You don’t have to earn a moment A little lighter now

Verse 2

You’d ask me if we have a house I’d show you how the sunlight falls We don’t have the trophy case But there is laughter in the halls I still buy notebooks we don’t need To draw those crooked summer trees You ask me, “Do we like it now?” I draw another one to see

Pre-chorus · variation

Some dreams stayed close Some took a different shape I’m still learning how to hold them Without filling every day

Chorus · repeat

A little lighter, a little lighter With every step you take There is more to who you are Than the things you’ve yet to be Let a little light come pouring in Let the afternoon be ours You don’t have to earn a moment A little lighter now

Bridge

I came to tell you, “You’re enough” Then tell you all the things we’ve done You take the picture from my hands And turn it over, draw a sun I find a pencil in my coat You move your chair to make some room I leave the speech beside the book There’s something I could learn from you

Final chorus

A little lighter, a little lighter With every step we take We can love who we are now While we find out who we’ll be Let the afternoon come pouring in Leave the book upon the ground Take my hand, we’re going outside A little lighter now

Post-chorus

A little lighter, a little lighter Here and now, here and now Feel the sun upon your face A little lighter now

Outro

Your book is open on the floor My coat lies next to yours I know how hard you tried I’m proud of who we are

If your lyrics are in a language I can't understand, I will use an AI tool to help translate them so I can consider their meaning. Your lyrics will be shared with that tool, and its translation may miss nuance.

Make a little something.

  1. Choose your starting point.

Use a verse, a chorus, or a full song draft. Write your own melody, adapt or translate the shared lyric drafts, or write an original rap about the struggle of self-transformation: wanting to change, being afraid to let go, and making room for another side of yourself. You don't have to use the shared drafts. A phone recording is as welcome as a studio production.

  2. Make it at home in your language.

The English lyric drafts are the source text for translations. Any translations I provide are for convenience, not finished lyrics for every language or culture. I can't fully understand every cultural context, so please adapt the words, imagery, rhythm, and expressions to what feels natural and appropriate in yours. You don't need to follow the English word for word. Keep the theme, bring your own perspective, and credit the source and note your adaptations if you use a shared draft.

  3. Bring your sound. Or your movement.

For choreography, use your own recording or music you have permission to use. Check the platform's music rules, especially for commercial posts. This invitation does not clear anyone else's recording, samples, or composition.

  4. Share it your way.

If you post on TikTok, Instagram, or elsewhere, you can use #StillMeZeredi or #RoomForAnotherAnswer. Hashtags are optional, not entry forms. Posting does not guarantee that we will see or feature your work.

Your contribution stays yours.

Participating does not assign your rights to Zeredi. You retain whatever rights you hold in your original lyrics, music, performance, choreography, and recording, subject to collaborators' and third-party rights. An original rap written around the theme is your own creative work, not a lyric draft supplied for this challenge. If you don't adapt or use a shared draft, its license and suggested credit do not apply: no Zeredi credit or mention is required. Other people can explore the same theme or adapt the shared drafts too; neither the theme nor the drafts are exclusive to any participant.

Permission for the shared lyrics

To the extent Zeredi holds copyright in the lyric drafts shared through the Song Challenge, I offer them under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). You may share and adapt the drafts, including through translations, musical settings, recordings, and commercial releases, subject to that license. Credit the source, link the license, and indicate changes. This permission covers the shared lyric drafts only—not Zeredi's logo, other artwork, or anyone else's music.

A place for your interpretation

For each song, I may invite creators of up to 10 interpretations that I personally like, whether for how they explore the song's theme or for the creativity of their work, to be featured on this site, with their permission and agreed credit. This is a personal selection, not a ranking or competition. Your work remains yours, and choosing not to be featured does not affect your participation.

A hashtag, public link, or contact message does not authorize Zeredi to download, reupload, edit, or use your work in advertising. If I would like to feature it, I will ask separately and agree on the use and credit. Make sure all relevant contributors can agree too.
